Surgeons perform first-ever fetal surgery for rare mass Surgeons at the Texas Center for Fetal Surgery performed a lifesaving surgical procedure on a 37-week fetus who would have otherwise died at birth because of a large chest mass. This is the first-ever fetal surgery procedure done for this rare mass. The mass, an immature mesenchymal neoplasm, was located on the right side of the infant's chest and was pressing against his heart and both lungs, blocking the flow of blood from the abdomen to the heart. Doctors determined that without surgery the child would have died of heart failure or lack of oxygen shortly after birth. "The infant almost didn't make it to birth and, in fact, was deteriorating rapidly in the hours before the procedure," said Dr. Oluyinka Olutoye, co-director of the center, a fetal surgeon at Texas Children's and assistant professor of surgery at Baylor College of Medicine. Surgeons at the center performed an ex utero intrapartum treatment (EXIT) to remove the mass. During EXIT, surgeons partially remove the fetus from the womb and perform surgery while the fetus remains attached to the umbilical cord. When the procedure is complete, the baby's umbilical cord is cut, and surgeons deliver the baby. In this case, the baby, an 8-pound boy from Round Rock, Texas, was delivered in a two-hour modified Caesarean section, during which surgeons cleared his airway, attached breathing tubes and intravenous lines and opened the right chest to deliver the mass. Immediately following the delivery, surgeons completed removal of the mass in a delicate two-and-a-half-hour procedure. The baby was cared for at the Texas Children's Newborn Center� following the surgery and is now home in Round Rock with his parents. "While other EXIT procedures have been done for cystic lung lesions, this is the first reported EXIT to resection for an immature mesenchymal neoplasm," said Dr. Darrell Cass, co-director of the center, a fetal surgeon at Texas Children's and assistant professor of surgery at Baylor. Children's ranks among top pediatric hospitals Texas Children's Hospital remained in the No. 4 spot in the ranking of the top 10 pediatric hospitals in the United States, according to U.S.News & World Report's "America's Best Hospitals 2005." The hospital also was ranked the best pediatric hospital in the Southwest United States by the magazine. This is the sixth consecutive year Texas Children's has ranked among the top 10 pediatric hospitals in the U.S.News & World Report survey, which uses doctors' opinions to judge hospital reputations. |

Study shows arthritis of the spine is overlooked in children When kids or teens experience aching joints and stiffness it may be growing pains - or it could be something far more serious. Researchers say arthritis of the spine and other joints can go undiagnosed for years, leading to serious problems as children grow into adults.
